Controllers drop the BOM

By integrating the boot diode, overcurrent protection, and MOSFET drivers onto one chip, Intersil believes its ISL6545 and ISL6545A single-output PWM controllers (pictured) will slash bill-of-materials (BOM) cost. The devices' overcurrent function protects the controllers from a shorted output by using the lower MOSFET's rDS(on) to monitor the current. This also cuts cost by eliminating the currentsensing resistor.
