Lowest-Power Solution For High-speed Data Serialisation

Fairchild Semiconductor has developed an ultra-compact serialiser/deserialiser called µSerDes, which the company claims provides the most-compact, lowest-EMI, and lowest-power solution for high-speed data serialisation in ultra-portable applications.

The new FIN12 and FIN24 devices are aimed at solving the design challenges of reliable data transmission, in particular through the hinge or rotation axis in clamshell mobile-phone designs.

These devices reduce traditionally wide parallel paths of data to a high-speed serial link, reducing the interconnection's wires six to sevenfold. The serial link is implemented using EMI-reducing differential technology that can result in faster EMC approval.

This flexible interface solution can be implemented across multiple display platforms, allowing faster product development cycles, says the company. µSerDes also lowers overall component count and board-space requirements.

Standby power consumption is claimed to be 10 times lower than any other solution. The devices can reduce EMI by 30 to 40dB at the fundamental frequency, as well as reducing troublesome harmonics to less than -100dBm.

These enhancements are achieved through serialisation architectural innovations and by offering two differential I/O technologies—Low power LVDS (LpLVDS) and Current Transfer Logic (CTL)—that reduce power and EMI compared to traditional I/O technology.
